Brantford, ON – The Brant NDP is pleased to announce its campaign dinner at The Ring Caribbean Restaurant, 271 Colborne Street, on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 featuring NDP Leader Jack Layton and local candidate Marc Laferriere. The first seating for this full Caribbean-style Christmas dinner will be at 6:00pm, with a second seating beginning at 8:00pm.
The suggested price is 90 cents for adults and 50 cents for students and children. For those interested in donating to the campaign above the cost of dinner, any donations above $20 will receive a tax receipt and are much appreciated to continue our work during the campaign.
The Brant NDP is responding to other local parties expensive and elite campaign dinners which are often $90-$150 a plate. It is no wonder apathy is increasing in this system of party politics. "We were told by other parties that in order to be competitive we would have to organize expensive and exclusive events," stated Marc Laferriere, "we kindly disagree. The Brant NDP believes that accessibility and engagement are more important. This is what our movement in Brant is all about."
Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton will be attending and speaking at the event to support candidate Marc Laferriere and to listen to the needs of Brant constituents. "I am pleased to be a part of this event that demonstrates the growing movement in Brant for more sustainable and equitable action from the government on issues like the HST, economic development, affordability, climate change and retirement savings among other vital issues.”

Letter to the Editor published on HST
Brantford Expositor.... Letter to the Editor
The HST is being forced upon the people of Ontario without significant debate and without proper public consultation . No political party campaigned on implementing in the HST in the 2007 Provincial election nor in the 2008 Federal Election. I oppose this tax along with the Federal NDP lead by Jack Layton and Provincial NDP lead by Andrea Horwath. Our Liberal Mpp Dave Levac and our Conservative MP Phil McColeman support the HST and will vote accordingly. I take issue with Mr. Levacs comments that there has been plenty of discussion and information on the HST. The Ontario Liberal implementation of the the HST is going to be a massive burden upon the people of Brant. The benefits of the HST are insignificant compared to the hardship it is going to create. This is a tax grab and nothing less. The Ontario Liberals have even gone out on a limb to say that this tax will create 600,000 jobs. My discussions with the people in this riding suggests they aren't buying this snake oil either.The irony of the
Conservative government diverting $8 Billion dollars in EI Surplus away from those who paid into EI is not lost upon me. Now during a period of significant unemployment and with the EI coffers bare, the Conservatives could only find $300 Million to put back into EI across Canada for 2010. Compare this to the $4.3 Billion dollars the Conservatives are willing to spend our tax dollars on to "bribe" Ontario to implement a new tax. Ontarians are looking at the new face of stimulus spending.

Brant New Democrats will nominate a candidate for next federal election at a meeting Thursday at 7:30 p. m. at the Brantford and District Labour Centre.
The only declared candidate is Marc Laferriere, a 28-year-old clinical social worker with Woodview Children's Mental Health and Autism Services.
He has collected endorsements from previous candidate Brian Van Tilborg, Don Guest, first vice-president of the Brantford District Labour Council.
Laferriere said he understands the dynamics of a successful campaign after having worked on two.
In 2008, he worked on the campaigns of New Democrats Bruce Hyer, now MP for Thunder Bay-Superior North, and John Rafferty, MP for Thunder Bay-Rainy River.
"I saw from start to finish how they were organized and carried off," said Laferriere. "We will be using a lot of what was learned there."
The Brant campaign has one early tactic ready to go. The team will kick off a "Recycling Phil McColeman" initiative, in which people will be invited to bring all their copies of mailouts and flyers to the nomination meeting and other events. Party workers will collect and recycle them.

All have expressed action in passing anti scab legislation and support the resolution of city council.

Unemployment worst in 26 years
It’s coming in like waves and I’m expecting the tidal waves soon.”
That was former New Democratic Party candidate Brian Van Tilborg’s reaction to figures released by a Statistics Canada labour force survey today that showed the unemployment rate in Canada rose to 6.3 per cent in November – the worst level in a quarter century.

Hello everyone.
I just want to talk about the phone call I had with Jack Layton. As you remember Jack set up a time to listen to us when he came to Brantford back in 07.
He never forgot.
He called me up, we talked about alot of things, especially with this riding. And he asked me to run for him, said I would make a great MP. "It would be great to work together" were his exact words.
My nomination to be the federal NDP candidate is this Saturday Morning at 11am at the Labour Centre 11oo Clarence Street.
Hey, I wanted an election like I wanted a hole in the head. I had my holidays booked to go up North and Celebrate with Jordan Szoke his newest Championships.
Now I am in a race of my own.

Employers should pay into a rainy day fund that would cover severances for workers when companies fail, says Hamilton East-Stoney Creek MPP Paul Miller.The proposal comes after recent plant closures at Genfast Manufacturing, Hamilton Specialty Bar and Amcan Castings left workers without the wages, severance and vacation pay they were owed."As the economy struggles and there's more trouble in the States, we need something in place now to protect the working people of this province," Miller said yesterday.The fund -- the focus of a bill now approaching a third and final reading at Queen's Park -- would be administered by an appointee of the lieutenant-governor. It would work like an insurance policy, with employers paying regular premiums based on the wage costs.Final details, including how much employees might contribute to the premium, have yet to be decided. Miller says most of the fine points will be worked out when the proposal goes before a legislative subcommittee. The fund would be voluntary, he added, with workers voting on whether to participate."This is a type of social safety net," he said. "This would tide people over and give them money to retrain for new jobs."About 200 workers at Brantford's Genfast Manufacturing are still owed $8 million in severance, termination and vacation pay after the plant closed last year, union officials say. Workers at Amcan Castings saw only 70 per cent of their severances covered after that plant announced plans to liquidate last fall. And 360 employees of Hamilton Specialty Bar, since revived by new owners, never received the severance pay they were owed when the Sherman Avenue North plant closed last summer.Though he agrees with the bill in principle, Bill Baker, president of the United Steelworkers local at Hamilton Specialty Bar, says he is anxious for more details. "The question I'd have is whether my workers' premiums will be set aside for them or put into a bigger pool. That fund could be drawn down pretty quickly otherwise."Conservative labour critic Bob Bailey, whose caucus voted against the bill in its second reading, argued the fund would discourage new business investment in the province by adding regulatory hurdles.

Thank You
HelloI am back at the Action Centre today.
I want to thank all those from Easton Coatings and Genfast who took a sign, showed support, came out and volunteered, or just simply cheered me on in my bid for election.
We stuck to the issues, yet people have a right to be cynical. Almost half the voters stayed home, some 49%, which means those that didn't vote represent more people then voted for the incumbent. That is how turned off and disillusioned people have become. I understand this cynicism as I often share it, but I will vote, participate and do whatever is required, because it is important. Change can occur with the conviction to follow through and make your voice heard.
I rejoin you all as another former worker from a closed manufacturing plant, who is going to use the action centre services to find fulltime steady employment.Congratulations to all who have done so, in the meantime, don't forget about what we set out to do.
Shortly after the election another plant was occupied by workers trying to get severance from a bankrupt company. They were successfull in coming to a deal for 70% of their severance, whereas nothing was being offered by the company prior to the takeover.
Again, thanks for your support.
