Brantford, ON – The Brant NDP is pleased to announce its campaign dinner at The Ring Caribbean Restaurant, 271 Colborne Street, on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 featuring NDP Leader Jack Layton and local candidate Marc Laferriere. The first seating for this full Caribbean-style Christmas dinner will be at 6:00pm, with a second seating beginning at 8:00pm.

The suggested price is 90 cents for adults and 50 cents for students and children. For those interested in donating to the campaign above the cost of dinner, any donations above $20 will receive a tax receipt and are much appreciated to continue our work during the campaign.

The Brant NDP is responding to other local parties expensive and elite campaign dinners which are often $90-$150 a plate. It is no wonder apathy is increasing in this system of party politics. The HST is being forced upon the people of Ontario without significant debate and without proper public consultation . No political party campaigned on implementing in the HST in the 2007 Provincial election nor in the 2008 Federal Election. I oppose this tax along with the Federal NDP lead by Jack Layton and Provincial NDP lead by Andrea Horwath. Our Liberal Mpp Dave Levac and our Conservative MP Phil McColeman support the HST and will vote accordingly. I take issue with Mr. Levacs comments that there has been plenty of discussion and information on the HST. The Ontario Liberal implementation of the the HST is going to be a massive burden upon the people of Brant. The benefits of the HST are insignificant compared to the hardship it is going to create. This is a tax grab and nothing less. The Ontario Liberals have even gone out on a limb to say that this tax will create 600,000 jobs. My discussions with the people in this riding suggests they aren't buying this snake oil either.The irony of the

Conservative government diverting $8 Billion dollars in EI Surplus away from those who paid into EI is not lost upon me. Now during a period of significant unemployment and with the EI coffers bare, the Conservatives could only find $300 Million to put back into EI across Canada for 2010. Compare this to the $4.3 Billion dollars the Conservatives are willing to spend our tax dollars on to "bribe" Ontario to implement a new tax. Ontarians are looking at the new face of stimulus spending.

NDP New Democrat MPs stand alone in opposing the HST in the House of Commons OTTAWA – Federal New Democrat MPs say that Conservative and Liberal MPs sold out the people of Southwestern Ontario by standing up and voting in support of the Harper government’s $4.3 billion federal incentive payment to the Ontario government that enables the implementation of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in that province. “These Conservative and Liberal MPs from Ontario, such as Pat Davidson (Sarnia-Lambton), Jeff Watson (Essex), Phil McColeman (Brant) and Diane Finley (Haldimand – Norfolk), have sold out their constituents today and voted to support the HST which will raise the price of gas, hydro, home heating oil and propane, snow removal, hockey registration, internet, cable service, and funerals by a full 8 percent,” Rafferty said. “These Conservative MPs, joined by their allies in the Liberal Party, needlessly jacked up the price of these goods and services during the deepest recession in 80 years. The people of Southwestern Ontario have been betrayed by their elected representatives who stood up when Stephen Harper ordered them to and voted for a massive tax hike on families in this province.” The idea of harmonizing the sales taxes in Ontario and other provinces during the recession was first pushed by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty in 2008, and the Ontario Liberal government of Dalton McGuinty agreed to the plan last spring after the federal Conservatives offered them a $4.3 billion lump sum “incentive” payment. The harmonization process for sales taxes unites the province’s 8 percent Retail Sales Tax (RST) with the 5 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) into a single 13 percent Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). However several items that were previously exempt from the PST will now see their prices increase 8 percent to “harmonize” their taxation under the new HST. Some of the items that will their price increase by 8 percent under the new HST regime include gasoline, home heating oil, hydro, cable, internet, haircuts, hockey registration and rink rentals, golf and gym memberships, mutual fund sales, and funerals among hundreds of others. “These Ontario MPs chose to stand in support of Stephen Harper and Dalton McGuinty’ s HST and against the very people of they claim to represent in Sarnia-Lambton, Essex, Brant, and Haldimand-Norfolk ,” Rafferty said. “These MPs had a chance to the stop the HST on behalf of their constituents and they refused to do so. I hope their people of Southwestern Ontario will hold them to account in the next election for this outrageous betrayal.”

SENATOR OF THE WEEK: Raymond Lavigne – Most Expensive per days worked The average Canadian would have to work every day for two and a half years to take home the amount that Canada’s least active Senator charged for only two days of work. While Canadians are working harder and harder to make ends meet, Senator Raymond Lavigne showed up for work only twice last year. But he has a good excuse: the Liberal-appointed Senator is on leave while being investigated for “alleged use of Senate resources for personal gain.” (RCMP press release, 14 August 2007) And while these charges prevent Lavigne from working very much, they haven’t prevented him from putting taxpayers on the hook for $58,000 in office expenses and $47,000 in travel, on top of his $132,000 salary. Seems there’s no price too high for the constituents who never elected Canada’s least active Senator. Also in the top 10 highest spending Senators per day is Liberal Mobina Jaffer who charged $7,900 for each of the 41 days she attended. Coincidentally, Jaffer is also presently under investigation by the BC Law Society for over-billing.

Conservative MP refers to Unemployed as "No Good Bastards"

When is an apology not good enough? When it is insincere and when what the person really thinks has already been spoken. Nothing would please me more then seeing Conservative MP Keddy turfed from office and lose that cushy MP salary. The statement that the unemployed are "No Good Bastards" is unbecoming of someone who is going to cash in on gold plated pension plan for a few short years on the Conservative government dole.

These comments go inline with the thinking of Conservative MP, Human Resource Minister Diane Finley who believes that EI is lucrative. There is a time when those disconnected from the real world need a dose of reality. In this case, its the Conservative MPs. Diane Finley need not worry, her husband, a Conservative insider landed a cushy patronage appointment to the Senate and a big salary, a job for the rest of his life, and another gold plated pension plan. He is likely the guy behind those Conservative propoganda flyers put out in Phil McColemans name, paid for by the Canadian Taxpayer. Those 13% newly unemployed in Brant under Mr McColemans watch pay taxes and paid into EI. They too have been slurred by this Conservative MPs comments.

Thank your fellow Conservative MPs and Conservative Minister for publicly treating people like dirt.... those very people thrown out of work by Conservative governments sellout/oneside trade deals, weak economic policy and the inability to understand the engine that drives the Canadian Economy. This Conservative government in 2 short years diverted $8 Billion in EI surpluses away from the unemployed and gave the money to their pet projects and only under duress decided to put back a significantly smaller 900 Million over a 3 year period.

I wonder who 900,000 newly unemployed in 2009 consider to be the "No good Bastards"

Brant New Democrats will nominate a candidate for next federal election at a meeting Thursday at 7:30 p. m. at the Brantford and District Labour Centre.
The only declared candidate is Marc Laferriere, a 28-year-old clinical social worker with Woodview Children's Mental Health and Autism Services.

He has collected endorsements from previous candidate Brian Van Tilborg, Don Guest, first vice-president of the Brantford District Labour Council.
Laferriere said he understands the dynamics of a successful campaign after having worked on two.
In 2008, he worked on the campaigns of New Democrats Bruce Hyer, now MP for Thunder Bay-Superior North, and John Rafferty, MP for Thunder Bay-Rainy River.
"I saw from start to finish how they were organized and carried off," said Laferriere. "We will be using a lot of what was learned there."
The Brant campaign has one early tactic ready to go. The team will kick off a "Recycling Phil McColeman" initiative, in which people will be invited to bring all their copies of mailouts and flyers to the nomination meeting and other events. Party workers will collect and recycle them.

The federal government is ardently hoping the backlash from the HST will be directed toward the two provincial governments. Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Tuesday during question period that his government believes that sales taxes should come down, which is why the GST was lowered.

But the fact is the federal government is aiding and abetting the provinces. It plans to pay B.C. and Ontario almost $6 billion to ease the transition to the HST

The largest single source of injuries on a picket line is scab labour.Here in Ontario we had a brief period of time after 1990 where the New Democrats were in power and scabs were outlawed, like they are in some other jurisdictions in this country. The absence of labour unrest during that time when anti-scab legislation was in effect was remarkable. When there were strikes, they were shorter-or, even worse, lockouts. I believe sincerely, the New Democrats believe sincerely and working women and men believe sincerely that scabs are an abomination.No worker ever joins the picket line willingly. Let's make that very, very clear, because when you're on a picket line, you're out there day in, day out. If it's wintertime, when winter's approaching, you're out there in the coldest of winter days and in the slush and the snow where you never get warm and your feet never get dry.Collective bargaining takes place at the bargaining table. To allow corporate bosses to circumvent, to avoid, collective bargaining at the table by importing scabs is once again an outrage. I believe, New Democrats believe, that as long as scabs are allowed in the province of Ontario, strikes will be longer and lockouts will be longer.Why, for the life of me, would anyone want to be a scab? Well, in the type of economy that we've developed, where there are more and more unemployed and people are earning lower and lower wages, sometimes family heads, women or men, feel compelled to take any job at any price. But they're very short-sighted, because the effect of scabbing, especially now, when the theme in labour relations by the corporate world is to end defined benefits-pension plans-and when the agenda of the corporate world is to reduce wages and when the agenda is to reduce workforces-scabs simply join with that agenda. They endorse it and they support it and they advocate for it and they make that agenda possible.

In 2007, the Ontario Liberals refused to help. It's no different in 2009.

The Ontario Liberals turned their backs on saving our jobs, our severance and our termination pay. Since 2007 the former employee of Genfast continue to hold the Federal and Provincial Governments accountable.

Since our closure, the Wage Earner Protection Act has come into law. Too late for Genfast Employees, however, this legislation helps those whose companies have declared bankruptcy or used bankruptcy provisions to continue global operations and avoid their legal obligations in Canada and Ontario.

As long as our governments allow the pillaging of our industrial sector, closures and orchestrated bankruptcies will remain to be a monthly occurance.

There is little indication that the government realizes the technology that is leaving and let alone the jobs that are lost.

I was visiting a packed house at the Steelworkers Action Centre BBQ today. I met with and heard some of the concerns of many of the recently and not-so-recently laid off in our community when the news hit. 350 more jobs lost as Raymond Industrial closes.Greg McMillan wrote a spot on piece (See Brantford.com blog)

that really looks at the effect on the workers and their families. I highly recommend it to get a sense of the human impact this closing had and will continue to have on our community. Here is a small taste:"I am guessing that just about everyone reading this knows of someone affected by the Raymond closing. That’s how much these workers are entrenched in the community...I hazard to guess that not since the major farm equipment manufacturing meltdown have we witnessed anything similar to this. It’s not pleasant to point out, but isn’t it a fact?

"The comments at the BBQ said it all. “I thought this recession was supposed to be over?” said a friend of mine. In Brantford the recession is definitely not over.

Food bank use increased 28% and continues to rise this year.

Local unemployment is at 13% and the national average sits at 8.7%. The gap between the local and national numbers is troubling. Big shiny cheques are delivered on the front pages of our local newspapers while the smaller cheques, the ones our workers used to feed their families are disappearing or moving to other countries. We paid into EI for years just to help us transition out of messes like this one.

It came off your pay cheque every payday. You paid for it, created a surplus for just such an occasion and they took it from you.

Tax cuts are made for businesses with no strings attached. They have used that money to set up shop overseas. We paid for that too.

I would much rather have had the wages that were taken from me go to help out the families of laid off workers. I don’t mind paying taxes if it means sustainable growth and if the money goes to the things we want it to go to like better health care, and a higher quality of life for our communities.

We need a prudent sensible plan. The NDP has one and I would invite you to read our platform on “Creating Jobs and Innovation in a New Energy Economy.”

In it we show how a Green-Collar Jobs fund is a sensible investment for our economy and our environment. How a Job Protection Commissioner is needed to investigate major layoffs and shut downs like the Raymond Plant or the many others that have hit us in the last several years.

It outlines a way to add pro-active measures to provide the right kind of atmosphere for job creation and innovation in all sectors not just for the oil companies and the banks. Sectors based strategies in manufacturing; petro-chemicals; environmental technologies; tool and die; machinery and equipment; tourism; media; telecommunications; and agriculture.Big shiny cheques are nice for those who get them but sustainable, forward thinking strategies are better for everyone.

Raymond Industrial Equipment, a manufacturer of forklifts and related equipment, is closing, putting several hundred people out of work, sources said Friday.
Employees were met by the news of the Elgin Street plant’s closure early Friday morning.
It is expected the plant will move its operations to the U.S. over the next several months. The plant’s parent company, Raymond Corporation, is headquartered in Greene, NY.

Genfast Closed April 5th, 2007 sending hundreds of Salaried and Bargaining unit employees to the Unemployment Line. A trend that would continue in Brant County to present day.

The United Steelworkers on behalf of the former Bargaining Unit Employees is continuing forward in its court case against Parent Company MNP corporation for owed Severance and Termination Pay.

The dedication of the United Steelworkers successfully secured monies owing in wages, then half of the vacation pay, and then another 40% of vacation payed owed, and in November 2008 secured the final 10% of owed vacation pay.

Some Salaried Employees were not as fortuneate.

The United Steelworkers has scheduled Six More court dates.

Steelworkers embroiled in a bitter strike for more than a year at Engineered Coated Products took top billing as they led the ranks of more than 100 local trade unionists in the annual Labour Day march on Monday.

Also in the march were: members of Steelworkers 819 at Gerdau Ameristeel; municipal workers in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 181 who are facing difficult contract talks with a city council bent on bringing in a budget with no tax increase next year; members of CUPE Local 5100 representing school board employees; the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation District 23 and the United Food and Commercial Workers.

Which side are you on, boys? Which side are you on?" Steve Sinnicks, a local musician loyal to the trade union movement, sang in refrain while altering the verses to castigate federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and the banks.

Fourteen-year-old Ryan Jamula, who is going into Grade 9 at Brantford Collegiate Institute, was chosen by the Brant NDP riding association, where he is a youth representative, to give a speech on the struggles and victories of the trade union movement and its current predicament. He ended by exhorting listeners to support the New Democrats in upcoming elections.

E.C.P. Strike One year in the trenches

The E.C.P strike is now over 1 year. On Sunday I spent some time on the line, the date marking 1 full year of picketing. The solidarity on that line is impressive. Good people of good character. No doubt a great workforce that has bonded with each other. I was treated to hamburgs, sausages, cabbages, pie, and more as they reflected 1 year outside the plant during one of the coldest winters and one of the wettest summers. Many many vehicles that drove by, honk their horns in support and people cheered.

But for me, there is something wrong with the entire situation.

The unbalanced nature of our Labour Laws combined with the command of Global, Foreign own companies and the power they wield over Canadian Operations and the governments of Canada and Ontario. Never before have I directly witnessed a strike for so long a period. Now more then ever, I understand the need to rebalance our labour laws and laws on foreign ownership in Canada.

A nyone riding the emotional wave of a labour strike can feel powerless at some point.
The employees are left without a paycheque. Managers are forced into irregular duties. And consumers are inconvenienced by the lack of product or services. All become victims riding that emotional wave.
Certainly, it's better when we all get along. But, sometimes, we need to check our feelings at the door when we try to understand why labour conflicts, such as strikes and blockades, become necessary.
From a human rights point of view, some employers only behave themselves because they are deterred by organized labour. The rights of any worker can be stomped on without the labour laws for which unions fought.
Certainly, unions got no respect during these hot summer days in the City of Toronto, where the stench of rotting garbage was overpowering in some neighbourhoods. People were mad, but surprisingly tolerant of these workers' right to strike. Garbage collection is hard work that can easily wear out a person's body before its time.
The now-resolved labour blockade at the Meridian automotive plant on Henry Street is a bittersweet win of little meaning for a large number of local employees who have lost long-term jobs with nary a pittance of legally owed severance pay. Many American controlled firms are pulling up stakes in Canada and shifting production to cheap third world factories.
Across Henry Street, at ECP, the United Steelworkers were confronted at the bargaining table by a reportedly profitable company demanding a 25% wage reduction. These demands caused a strike that has lasted almost a year. According to media reports, the steelworkers have offered wage concessions of 16% but the company's use of replacement workers (a practice that was once illegal in Ontario) has elongated the strike.
Private sector unions have always been under-the-gun to a greater extent than their public sector counterparts. Both public and private sector unionists face the job cuts created by contracting out, but the latter is threatened by companies closing more than ever before. Today's corporations far too easily bankrupt themselves and move on to form new corporations. Slack corporate law, as manifested by lazy governments, controlled by the upper classes is a major threat to modern job security and economic stability.
The US Steel plant closings in Hamilton and Nanticoke will prove devastating for
many employees and their families. I expect this organization to eventually become a shell company importing Chinese and Indian steel into North America. The profit margins are huge and the environmental laws are virtually non-existent.

A deal has been struck to end as early as Tuesday the blockade by workers of Meridian Automotive Sevices Ltd. on Henry Street -- but the company itself is not part of the deal.
The Xerox Corp. instead played the role of key broker during a motion at Superior Court Friday. Xerox, whose equipment and product was blocked inside the plant by workers demanding severance consideration by Meridian, worked two deals during court recesses to pave the way for an end to the impasse.
First, it off ered to pay landlord Brant Business Park $122,000 to secure the release of its property. That offer, representing the amount Xerox owed Meridian for its manufacturing services, was quickly accepted by the landlord's lawyer, who then left the courtroom.

Labourers have taken offense to Finley's comment in the House of Commons in January as to why she won't reform the Employment Insurance (EI) program to help the extensive number of workers out of jobs.
"We do not want to make it lucrative for them to stay home and get paid for it," Finley said.
Imitating the couch potatoes they think Finley thinks they are, labourers sat their butts on couches outside her office before heading to a rally and barbecue at the United Steelworkers union hall in Nanticoke.

This week has been very busy.

The Brant Roundtable on Poverty held two events.
1) The Community Garden. (If you like growing your own things and need land, its free and they have secured a beautiful location at Mohawk and Birketts.

2) The Temporary Employment Agency Workers forum. I was pleased to participate as one of the guest speakers. It was a room full of knowledge and many questions regarding Agency practices where highlighted and addressed.

The Brantford District Labour Council is in full gear organizing the Journey For Jobs. The dates for the Caravan is set in stone, and the bands, the food, and routes are planned. Its going to be alot of fun, to lighten us up under some very difficult circumstances. June 22nd with an overnight at Brant Park then out to the streets and a number of stops around the city before trekking to Simcoe and then to Hamilton for another BBQ and a stop at Confederation Park.
Most of the events, food, and overnights will be free. This is an event for everyone to get out and make some noise and have a good time. Even find a job in the process.

The BrantNDP hosted a free BBQ at Mohawk Park for everyone who showed up to meet the new Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath. She is focused on getting people organized to help make their lives better. The more that help, the better off we will be. It was a great time and alot of fun.

And... then.... the USW VS MNP Case at the Labour Relation Board. The case was heard for two days. I had time for Wednesdays opening statements...and there was a group of us that went down to observe.

The USW will be holding an Information Session in Hamilton later this month or first week in July. Updates to follow..

Ingersoll Fasteners in Ingersoll, Ont., is shutting its doors in the next three or four months.
Employees heard the news from company officials last week.
The workforce of 183 employees produces industrial cold-formed fasteners.
Ingersoll Fasteners began producing fasteners in 1887 under the name of the Morrow Screw and Nut Co. Ltd.

I was interested to read the letter that Brian shared below. I have not had to use temp agencies but my sons have. I have always been shocked at the crap they had to put up with as they tried to earn some cash. Fortunately at that time they were not supporting a family. Not so with a young aquaintance of mine, where I currently work. He does have a wife and two small children. He is from Jamaica and lived in Montreal for a number of years. He was hoping for a good future in a quiet community. He worked with me as a packer on my machines and was very good right from the get go. In our fast continuous process environment he was a blessing to me and I made a point to request him when I could. I met him uptown today. The company called his agency and said they didn't want him because he couldn't keep up. This is patently false. The temps are used as a factor to balance the bottom line without having to plan carefully. No regard is paid to their dignity or the fact that they deserve an opportunity to earn a living based on their own merit. My friend was a good worker with an outgoing personality and he was blackballed for no reason.
Any politician that supports the temp agency as it exists in Brantford is no different than the politicos of past eras who argued that the abolution of slavery would destroy the economy of the U.S. and England. They and the opponents of a livable minimum wage have a great deal in common with the economists who advised President Truman that if every American had a nice home,two cars, and enough to eat, then they would become lazy and the country would fall apart. Therefore the answer was to tax the citizens wages and keep them in need so industry could grow and profit.

ECP STRIKE AND TEMP AGENCIES Letter to Editor

I received a copy of a letter sent to the Brantford Expositor. As far as I am aware it was never published. So, here is the letter that I think is good enough to go on the blog.

So here is the Letter to the Editor.

I can see how some people think that others are making too much money and should be willing to accept clawbacks. Usually it is people who work harder than most for a lot less that are the ones complaining about these "overpriced" labourers. Fact is we are jealous. Do we want to make minimum wage and be whipped like dogs? I have seen worker after worker put in the hard hours in hopes of moving up. Accept less than safe working conditions so they weren't labled as a non-team player. Accept year after year at the temp agency because they were on the cusp of getting hired on full time at their placement.Can I see why these workers are feeling slighted by others who make more money? Of course I can. Can I sympathise with their jealousy of those with job security? Absolutely.

I have been the guy at the bottom trying to work his way up. I have worked for the temp agency and got sent home and told to never return because the placement was upset that I complained of unsafe working conditions (chemical exposure without protective gear). I have seen corporate greed run rampant in Brantford. What excuse is there for an employee to work 3 years 40 hours per week every week at a placement for a temp agency and not get hired on full time? If he was not good enough I think 3 years is enough time to figure it out.

I am a Millwright. I no longer live in Brantford for one reason. It simply doesn't pay to live there anymore. When people in my field who have worked hard to obtain their "tickets" and worked as an apprentice at lower wages only to see jobs dry up and the only NEW ones are through a temp agency I see a huge problem. Some Millwrights with decades of experience in Brantford make less than FIRST YEAR APPRENTICES in other areas of Ontario. They make so little because employers are ONLY hiring through agencies now.

Is it wrong to fight to keep the same wage you made yesterday? I don't think so. I know my mortgage won't drop by 25%. My hydro won't drop either. My gasoline is .80+ but the cost of crude is the same as it was when I could buy gas for 50 cents. Think long and hard before you tell ANYONE they should accept a lower wage. Would you vollenteer to take a 25% cut to show any of these people that it isn't a big deal? Maybe you want to throw away your chance to move up to one of these better paying jobs. Think about it. If licenced TRADES are working for $12 an hour at a temp agency what does that mean for all of the cheap labour? I can hire a WELL QUALIFIED employee for cheap so why hire anyone else at any price? A University grad might make head fry chef after 10 years. That is the reality if workers don't strike and fight to KEEP (let alone prosper and grow their income) what they have now.

Having a clean place to live and food on the table shouldn't be the only thing a paycheck can buy. But what else is left at min wage with temp agency job security?

Economic woes won't stop minimum wage hike

Brian Van Tilborg, co-ordinator of the Genfast Workers' Adjustment Centre and a former NDP candidate in Brant, said the increase is timely.
"It's one of the better programs we have to help the local economy," Van Tilborg said. "It puts more money into the hands of those who need it and these are the people who spend their money locally.
"They buy their groceries, clothing and everything else locally. They're not heading out of town and out of the country on trips."
He believes minimum wage increases are more likely to create jobs than to kill them.
"Stock market crashes and poor industrial policies are what kills jobs. Not minimum wage increases," Van Tilborg said. "The fact is, we've had minimum wages for years and it has never caused job losses like a lot of people like to think."

Today both Lawyers continued to butt heads. MNP had a junior lawyer present. They have nothing on the table and continue to make statements that they have no employees in Ontario. Even something as simple as Berman being the owner of the holding company and MNP is not an agreed fact. The USW lawyer was advocating a faster timeline, and putting pressure to go before the adjudicator before this month is over. MNP was suggesting that for them to provide a statement on some of the questioned posed, such as Theticas position and MNP could require time to get an answer and they haven't the staff to do the work in the States, because everyone is busy working through a difficult period. (The auto industry is bad you know).. My thought was, yeah, your not busy so answer the questions in writing now. But it is smoke and mirrors. MNP said they couldn't even look into the matter until March 15th, then possibly in a month or two provide what was requested. Obviously we would see nothing happen until JUNE.The USW lawyer did not think this was quick enough and wants to have it before court no later then April.The USW has alot of documentation that I got to look at. It is pretty condemning stuff, as you can see there are alot of MNP hands on the cookie jar.MNP is still arguing that we have no jurisdiction over them.The USW is still pressing forward.... :)This is just a quick brief of a brief meeting....

Another Perspective

I read with interest, Linda Montgomery's post about being laid off with nothing as opposed to the MPP's who are not financially afflicted at all. The two sided nature of our government's handling of various issues is a matter of long running affront to those who basically pay taxes and take the beating. I received an email, a few days ago, from friends in Christian ministry. They have seen a great deal of their own freedoms curtailed, in the name of religious and individual rights. The writer of this email has an interesting point as it applies to the law makers.(not the workers):

THE LAW IS THE LAW!

So if the Canadian government determines that it is against the law for the words 'under God' to be on our money, then, so be it.
And if that same government decides that the
'Ten Commandments'are not to be used in or on
a government installation, then, so be it.

I say, 'so be it,' because I would like to be a law abiding CDN citizen.
I say, 'so be it,' because I would like to think that smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions.
I would like to think that those people have the Canadian public's best interests at heart.

BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE?
Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot post His Commandments in Government buildings,
I don't believe the Government and its employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas celebrations which honor the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of Canadian life.
I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving, & Easter.
After all, it's just another day.
I'd like the ' CND Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays.' After all, it's just another day.
I'd like the Senate and the House of Commons to not have to worry about getting home for the'Christmas Break'
After all it's just another day.
I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved,
if all government offices & services would work on Christmas,Good Friday & Easter.
It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be
just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be 'politically correct.'

In fact....

I think that our government should work on Sundays
(initially set aside for worshipping God...)
because, after all, our government says that it should be just another day....

What do you all think????

If this idea gets to enough people, maybe our elected officials will stop giving in to the 'minority opinions' and begin, once again,
to represent the 'MAJORITY' of ALL of the Canadian people.

I find myself unemployed heading into the holiday season and not by choice. I will not be receiving EI or Christmas Holiday pay. The Prime Minister of Canada has chosen to lay himself and 307 MPs from the House of Commons until late January. This is by choice, and I can assure you, it will not feel like the layoff I recently received. The Prime Minister and the MPs will receive full pay, holiday pay, pension contributions, health care benefits, and all the regular parliamentary perks,including travel, accommodation, and living a life of luxury. Many people face a Christmas Holiday wondering how they are going to provide a healthy holiday dinner, Christmas gifts for their children, and are praying to the Lord that there is a stable job for next year. I could never afford to lay myself off or walk away from a job, because there is conflict at work. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, should not be rewarded with pay for shutting down his place of work. Neither should those MPs, who are laid off be rewarded with full parliamentary pay and privileges, until they return to work.

A brief update on what went on yesterday.

2 hours were spent between the two parties, unable to agree that MNP corporation had any business (es) in Canada/Ontario. MNP is providing the "I know nothing" about Genfast defence. That Genfast is a separate bankrupt company that has nothing to do with them. The MNP lawyer provided a "hypothetical" situation that had an incredible similarty to the Genfast/MNP relationship, and disputed that even under this situation the OLB has any jurisdiction as they are an American Company.

The MNP tactic is to block. Stop the argument at ownership vs control.

I wanted to jump out of the visitors chair on a number of occasions.
People from the salaried and union were in attendance watching this unfold.

I believe the USW wishes to have an update with our membership before the next hearing date.
